Government appoints senior academnic to key Marine Research
post
14 May 2001
MINISTER FOR STATE DEVELOPMENT
Western Australia State Development Minister Clive Brown has
announced the appointment of Dr John Keesing as Research Director
for a major marine environment research project.
The $20 million Strategic Research Fund for the Marine Environment,
created in November last year, is a joint venture between the
State Government and the CSIRO in Perth.
Dr Keesing, presently the Director of Research and Development
at Murdoch University, was Chief Scientist (Aquatic Sciences)
at South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI)
from 1994-1999.
He will take up his new appointment at the beginning of May,
reporting to a Joint Venture Management Committee made up of
senior representatives of key stakeholder State Government agencies
and the CSIRO.
Mr Brown said that Dr Keesing was selected from a strong field
of national and international applicants and had an exemplary
background in significant marine research projects.
"I congratulate Dr Keesing on his appointment and am confident
that he will help deliver important research which will be of
great benefit to Western Australia in particular and Australia
as a whole."
"At both the SARDI, where he managed strategic and applied
fisheries, aquaculture and marine and freshwater environmental
research, and latterly at Murdoch University, Dr Keesing has
also demonstrated excellence in technology transfer and commercialisation."
Dr Keesing is a member of the National Oceans Advisory Group,
which advises the Commonwealth government on Oceans Policy,
and until recently he was national President of the Australian
Marine Sciences Association.
