Ten new postgraduate scholarships in marine environmental research were announced today by State Development Minister Clive Brown.

The scholarships, valued at $665,000, are the first major initiative of Western Australia's most important marine research program, the $20 million Strategic Research Fund for the Marine Environment (SRFME), a joint venture between the WA Government and the CSIRO.

"The Government recognises the value of WA's unique marine environment and understands the need to carry out the scientific research necessary to facilitate conservation and sustainable development," Mr Brown said.

"These scholarships are an important component of the State Government's Innovate WA policy which aims to build capability in WA. They underscore the importance of building our level of expertise in marine science."

Research Director for the SRFME, Dr John Keesing, said the scholarships are for PhD degree studies on a range of projects of importance to WA's marine environment.

All four universities had all put forward projects, which included studies on ocean currents, circulation and sedimentation, seagrass meadows, zooplankton communities, primary productivity of coastal waters, impacts of pollution and the development of sophisticated environmental monitoring tools.

"An important characteristic of all projects is that successful applicants will have the benefit of working under the guidance of scientists in CSIRO and State Government agencies," Dr Keesing said.

The scholarships will be taken up at Curtin University of Technology, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia. Students have until the end of October to apply.
